EUDRAMODE® drug delivery and release technology offers customers further options for modified drug release, ranging from accelerated release after a defined lag time to immediate, uniform release (zero-order drug release). The system consists of a core containing the salt of an organic acid, which is coated with EUDRAGIT® NE, a polymer layer with neutral groups. The drug is then applied to this layer and finally enclosed in a coating of EUDRAGIT® RL/ RS.
Water permeates the EUDRAGIT® layers and reaches the core, where it dissolves the salt. The salt diffuses through the neutral EUDRAGIT® NE coating due to osmotic pressure and then interacts with the basic groups of EUDRAGIT® RL/ RS, making the outer coating permeable to the drug. With this system too, the start and speed of drug release can be controlled by varying the thickness and type of the layers as well as the type and concentration of the organic salt. This makes it possible to formulate all manner of different release profiles according to the development wishes of the customer. Chlorides or citrates delay drug release, whereas acetates or succinates accelerate it.
