EUDRAPULSE® enables rapid, immediate (pulsed) drug release after a defined lag time. A layer composed of drug and organic acid, or its salt, is applied to a core acting as the carrier, which is coated with EUDRAGIT® RL/ RS. This is a poly(meth)acrylate with basic groups such as quarternary ammonium groups, which becomes permeable in the presence of water. During passage through the gastrointestinal tract, water penetrates the EUDRAGIT® coating through to the core and dissolves the organic acid or its salt. The salt interacts with the ammonium ions of the EUDRAGIT® coating and modifies its original drug release. This combination of acids and polymer layer makes it possible to delay drug release for a prolonged period, eight hours for example, and then provide immediate pulsed release.
